Another International women's day came and went this year. Every year on March 8th there is this special celebration for women. In Poland when I was a young girl it was a yearly event. It's a tradition that dates back to 1909. I recall the parade of drunken men walking down the street their flowers held aloft " celebrating" women's day. It was in those days for the men of the community another excuse to get drunk. These days it's loaded with extra meaning. I overheard on the radio here in Quebec that for the first time in North America women comprised more than 50 percent of the workforce. I don't know how accurate that figure is but it certainly speaks to the changes that have taken place since I was a young girl.
